Founded in 1872 as a land-grant college named
Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College, Virginia
Tech is now a comprehensive, innovative research university
with the largest full-time student population in Virginia. Located
at Blacksburg, Virginia, the school is Virginia's largest university
with 25,000+ students and one of the top 50 research institutions
in the nation, it is an institution that firmly embraces a history
of putting knowledge to work. That tradition is rooted in our
motto, Ut Prosim: "That I May Serve," and our land-grant
missions of instruction, research, and solving the problems
of society through public service and outreach activities. Our
eight colleges (agriculture, architecture, arts/sciences, business,
human resources/education, engineering, natural resources, and
veterinary medicine) offer more degree programs than any other
university in the state with 60 undergraduate and 140 graduate
programs. Virginia Tech is one of the nation's leaders in developing
and using new instructional technologies. The schools athletic
department known as The
Hokies, has brought the college national attention. Virginia
Tech is one of two universities in the country that offers the
combined advantages of a military-style leadership development
program and a traditional academic and social life through the
Virginia Tech
Corps of Cadets.
